Robert Sternberg proposes the “balance theory of wisdom” that describes a wise person as one who uses practical intelligence to balance the needs of self, others and the environment over the short and long terms; mitigated by values; in order to adapt to, shape, and select environments—all for a common good.  Dr. Sternberg is Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences at Tufts University in Medford/Summerville MA, and Director of the Pace Center.
